A Joyful Beginning for Lifelong Learning in Preschool

St. Victor Preschool is an affordable private Catholic preschool in San Jose that prepares young children for academic success while nurturing curiosity and a love of learning. Serving children beginning at age three, our program helps students develop the social, emotional, and early academic skills that prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.

Teachers create a supportive and engaging environment where learning feels natural and joyful for preschoolers. Our program focuses on:

  • Social & Emotional Development: learning to share, take turns, cooperate with peers, and express feelings appropriately

  • Cognitive Development: building early math, problem-solving, and language skills

  • Literacy, Numeracy & Creative Expression: developing early reading awareness through storytelling, music, art, and imaginative play

As part of a Preschool–8th grade Catholic school community, students also begin learning values rooted in kindness, respect, and responsibility.

A highlight of the preschool experience is learning about different cultures and traditions throughout the year. Students celebrate special events such as Lunar New Year, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Filipino Heritage Month, helping them develop an appreciation for the diverse cultures that make up our school community.

One of our favorite traditions is the Lunar New Year celebration, where preschool students help lead the joyful schoolwide parade alongside their families.

Meet Your Preschool Director

Ms. Celeste Viray

My name is Celeste Viray and I am the Preschool Director at St. Victor School. I grew up in the neighborhood and have attended the neighborhood schools in the area. I have a BS degree in Child & Family Development with a minor in Sociology from San Diego State University. I worked in inner city schools in NYC for 2 years before coming back to San Jose and working in a child care center before coming to SV school. Growing up in a big family, volunteering with the children's ministry at church, and having fun and dedicated teachers has inspired me to become a teacher. When I'm not in the classroom, I like to spend time with my family and friends and catch up on my K-dramas!

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What age can children start preschool at St. Victor School?

Children may begin preschool at age three. Our program provides a nurturing environment where young learners develop social skills, early academic readiness, and curiosity through guided play and structured activities.

What do children learn in preschool?

Preschool students develop early literacy, math readiness, social-emotional skills, and creativity through hands-on learning. The Preschool Curriculum section above explains how these skills develop throughout the program.

Is St. Victor School’s preschool play-based?

Yes. Our preschool program blends play-based learning with guided instruction, helping children explore, ask questions, and build foundational academic skills through meaningful experiences.

How does preschool prepare children for kindergarten?

Preschool helps children develop important kindergarten readiness skills such as listening, cooperation, early reading awareness, number recognition, and problem-solving. Students are given dedicated time during homeroom to work on application essays, with opportunities for teacher feedback and peer-to-peer editing. These skills not only support the high school application process, but also help students build confidence in writing, self-reflection, and communication—skills they will continue to use when applying for summer jobs, leadership opportunities, and eventually college.

Do preschool students participate in school traditions?

Yes — preschool students are part of the St. Victor School community and participate in many school traditions and celebrations. In some cases, they join the whole school, and in others they participate in ways designed specifically for younger learners. For example, during Ash Wednesday, our pastor visits the preschool classroom to explain the meaning of the day and give students ashes, while the older grades attend Mass. Similarly, after the school’s May Crowning prayer service honoring Mary, preschool students hold their own mini May Crowning where teachers explain the tradition in a way that is meaningful for young children. This approach allows preschool students to begin learning about important faith traditions while participating in ways that are appropriate for their age.
